Summary
When using the subrange incremental refresh feature in Tableau Desktop 2024.2.x, the extract will not update with new data when the 'Extract > Refresh (Incremental)' option is used if the unit of 'Minimum date to refresh' is set to a value other than Years (such as Month or Day).
Steps to Reproduce
- Launch Tableau Desktop 2024.2.1.
- Connect to a data source. In this example, we use the Excel sheet for Sample - Superstore.
- Drag Orders sheet to the canvas.
- Click Extract.
- Click Edit for filters.
- Click Incremental Refresh.
- Table to refresh: Orders.
- Identify New rows using column: Order Date.
- Minimum date to refresh set to 1 year(s).
- Click to Sheet 1 to create extract (In this example, name this datasource Year).
- Create sheet using MDY(order date) on column and sum(sales) on rows.
- Repeat the steps above but instead of using year, use 12 months (In this example, name this datasource Month)
- Verify that Sheet 1 is using the Year for the view, Sheet 2 is using Month.
- In Excel, change the Sales for most of the Orders in 2023 and 2024 to 0.
- Save the sheet in Excel so the new 0 values are in place.
- In the Year view, right click the datasource > Extract > Refresh (Incremental).
- Allow extract to refresh.
- Notice view changes to reflect the 0 data as expected.
- Switch to Month view (i.e. Sheet 2).
- Right click datasource > Extract > Refresh (Incremental).
- Notice no change in view.
This issue reproduces in all current releases of 2024.2.x.
Workaround
- In Tableau Desktop, navigate to the data source page for the connected data source.
- Click the "extract" radio button in the top-right.
- This opens the 'Extract Data...' dialog box.
- Click Save Settings.
- The extract and workbook will update as expected.
