Summary

After upgrading from Tableau Server 2022.3.11 to Tableau Server 2023.3.4, connecting to or refreshing existing/upgraded, published data sources that were not embedded in workbooks are failing with an error.

The underlying cause of this issue concerns an unexpected removal of published TDS files upon upgrade to early 2023.1 or 2023.3 releases. The affected versions have been removed from our downloads page.

Error Details

java.io.FileNotFoundException: Unable to fetch data from any other host. This may indicate a lost or invalid folder.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. In a TS 2022.3.11 environment, make sure there are live connections published.
  2. Upgrade TS from 2022.3.11 to 2023.3.0.
  3. Upgrade TS from 2023.3.0 to 2023.3.3.
  4. Confirm that the published datasources are available and can be downloaded.
  5. Upgrade TS from 2023.3.3 to 2023.3.4.
    1. Can be an in-place upgrade or performed with a restore from previous backup.
    2. Try any of the following with a published data source, that is not embedded within a workbook.
      1. Load an existing workbook that connects to the DS, or create a new workbook that connects to the DS.
      2. Use the Test Connection feature.
      3. Download a .tds/x version of the data source locally.
  6. All will fail with an error related to missing file folder.

Workaround

  • Manually re-publish each affected data source.
  • If you are using or upgrading to Tableau Server version 2023.1.3 or earlier, or 2023.3.3 or earlier, upgrade to the latest maintenance release for your Tableau Server version. The latest releases can be found here.

Note: This issue was present in older releases of Tableau Server 2023.1 and 2023.3 (older than 2023.1.4 and 2023.3.4 respectively). The affected releases have been removed from our downloads page. The remaining available versions do not encounter the issue.
