Lead conversion failing with generic errors

Summary
Upon converting a lead in UI or via Apex you may observe a generic error as below:
"There was an error converting the lead. Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact your administrator"
This can be caused by mapping fields from expired managed packages. It would be recommended to ensure there are no fields in leads mapping coming from an expired package.
The upcoming fix is to display a more meaningful error message on the lead conversion page.
Steps to Reproduce
If you have an expired managed package in the org with a field in the Lead object, use the field for lead conversion mapping.
Attempts to convert leads will propagate a generic error below:
"There was an error converting the lead. Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact your administrator"
Workaround
The field from the expired package needs to be removed from lead mapping, or, extend the licenses of the package.
